You can’t really judge a book by its cover, and the saying is much more true in the supplement industry. We have a lot of powders all dressed up to look like the next best thing after eggs and toast, but they end up not even doing half the claims they promised.

That’s been kind of the public perception about MuscleTech as a whole. They like to create cool-looking products, price them super high, then end up falling flat on user experience.

We have their flagship protein powder Nitrotech in our sights and while it does look too cool for its own good, we think we should give it a chance to prove itself first.

Who Makes It?

Nitrotech is sold by the supplement giant MuscleTech. Their biggest claim is Nitrotech possesses the industry’s most powerful protein formula ever. On top of that, they also have an array of user reviews on their website [1].

Marketing Claims Made

The following claims were made about MuscleTech Nitrotech:

  • Superior muscle building: The muscle building aspect of it isn’t superior, but it does help with muscle protein synthesis as well as muscle repair thanks to creatine.
  • Best formulation: The formulation is indeed unique in that it contains a good dose of creatine. However, there’s a  reason creatine isn’t normally added in whey protein products and that is to reduce the risks of bloating. Not to mention many lifters already get creatine from some other product and they may end up overloading.
  • Best tasting powder: This one’s up to you, really. It has 15 flavors to choose from so, surely one of them must taste really good.

What’s in it?

Now, let’s take a closer look at what’s inside Nitrotech:

  • Whey Protein Isolate: This form of whey is considered among the purest and fastest absorbed. It was refined and passed through filtration which helped remove lactose, cholesterol, and even excess fat [2]. This is ideal for those with lactose intolerance.
  • Whey Protein Concentrate: This is the raw form of whey protein. It’s the most commonly sold form as it’s cheap and easy to produce. It’s also the form that’s known to cause bloating due to the presence of lactose [3].
  • Leucine, Isoleucine, Valine: These are your BCAAs or Branched Chain Amino Acids. These are all available in the previously mentioned whey products, but in rationed amounts. Adding them separately helps MuscleTech’s claim on how Nitrotech can supercharge muscle building. BCAAs are known to ramp up muscle protein synthesis which in turn promotes muscle growth [4].
  • Creatine Monohydrate: Creatine is often considered a staple ingredient in pre-workouts due to its muscle-building properties. It works primarily on damaged muscle tissue as creatine helps in muscle recovery. Combined with a good dosage, MuscleTech made sure to maximize its products’ muscle growing perks [5].
  • Papain, Amylase: These are digestive enzymes that help with metabolizing proteins. The better you digest proteins, the less likely is your powder going to end up being flushed down the toilet and more likely used as muscle food [6].

Benefits

The thing with MuscleTech products is, they always get scrutinized for overhyped, underdosed, and overpriced products. However, we think we can make a slight exception with Nitrotech.

While the claim that Nitrotech is the most powerful protein blend out there isn’t going to ring true anytime soon, we like to think the company managed to at least produce something that can at least be seen as potent and focused.

Not only is it a protein powder, but also contains a good ratio and dose of BCAAs as well as the pre-workout and muscle recovery staple creatine.

Some of the benefits of Nitrotech include getting massive recovery boosts and a good bulk thanks to its formula that’s actually properly dosed and with ingredients designed for hyper muscle recovery.

The effects of Papain and Amylase will make sure each gram is utilized to its fullest.

Precautions

For the most part, it seems the potential side effects will mainly come from the protein itself and possibly even creatine. Whey protein, in general, is known to give users a good bout of bloating.

Pair that with another known bloater in creatine and you might just end up feeling gassy. No biggie; just release that air and you should be good to go.

We always recommend you speak with your doctor before taking any supplements featured on this site.

How to Take It

MuscleTech recommends mixing either 1 scoop in 6 oz water or two scoops in 12 oz water. You can use skim milk too. Mix in a glass or shaker cup.

They also recommend taking it up to three times a day: between major meals and before and after exercise.

Taste/Flavors

Currently, Nitrotech has 15 flavors:

  • Milk Chocolate
  • Naturally flavored milk chocolate
  • Vanilla
  • Naturally flavored vanilla
  • Strawberry
  • Cookies and Cream
  • Mocha Cappuccino Swirl
  • Toasted S’mores
  • Birthday Cake
  • Chocolate Mint
  • Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
  • Snickerdoodle
  • Lucky Marshmallow
  • Chocolate Hazelnut
  • Banana Bliss

Number of Servings

One container has 20 servings. This should translate to 20 days unless you double up or use it more frequently.

Top Alternative to This Product

MuscleTech Nitrotech vs Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey

Nitrotech’s formula is indeed impressive, but we think Optimum Nutrition’s widely acclaimed Gold Standard 100% Whey has something to say when it comes to old fashioned protein.

Like Nitrotech, Gold Standard also heavily makes use of Whey protein isolates as well as a hefty dosage of BCAAs per serving. The only disadvantage Gold Standard has is the lack of creatine.

However, Gold Standard does make up for it by having a much lower price point.

Gold Standard is also available in 20 flavors – five more than what Nitrotech has to offer. The filler content is also much smaller than what Nitrotech has.

While it’s not clear cut who is the better one, we think it will entirely depend on your budget as well as goals. If you’re already taking a pre-workout with creatine, we believe Gold Standard 100% Whey would be the better choice. I mean, there is such a thing as too much creatine, bro.

Customer Feedback

The general consensus on Amazon and most online review sites seem to be positive with regards to Nitrotech.

Users like the decreased recovery times and the fact that their muscles aren’t as sore as they used to. Some even love the taste and miscibility.

Most of the criticisms revolve around inaccurate protein content, the metallic or overpowering sweet taste, and the possibility of making you feel dehydrated.

Bottom Line

MuscleTech Nitrotech’s flagship protein powder is not something we would call the most powerful formula, but it’s pretty good.

It makes use of potent whey protein forms supercharged by a good dosage of BCAAs for better muscle recovery.

The 3 grams creatine is a rare take, but a welcome one given its benefits for muscle recovery and even performance.

Most of the criticism around Nitrotech is more on the technical and physical aspects of the product, and most products in the market have them too from time to time.

Overall, we think MuscleTech Nitrotech is worth the money. It’s especially good if you’re also loading up on creatine.
