Men who want to raise their testosterone do it for a variety of reasons: For performance, vigor, muscle growth, and of course for better libido.

You can always eat your way to a higher testosterone level, but if you’re over 40 (and experiencing testosterone decline), food may not be the most ideal source of testosterone boosting.

This is when men start considering the idea of actually taking something for their slow, yet continuous decline in hormonal masculinity. Most often, this comes in the form of supplementing with a testosterone booster, because sometimes, even strong men need a helping hand.

That is what Nugenix Total-T wants to help older men with. But at $69.99, is their testosterone formula worth the price? Read our review to find out!

Who Makes It?

Nugenix Total-T is sold by Nugenix through GNC. Nugenix is a relatively large supplement company that’s known for primarily selling supplements for men. This makes the Nugenix brand a reputable name in the male supplement industry.

Marketing Claims Made

Nugenix Total-T is marketed to help you reach your male performance goals by safely boosting free and total testosterone for greater results in and out of the gym. We translate this as “you will lift heavier weights and make your partner happy in bed too.”

The following claims were made about Nugenix Total-T:

  • Total testosterone boosting formula: Claims to help boost your libido and energy levels.
  • Lean mass benefits: In the ingredients, for this, there is only citrulline as well as a bit of muscle benefits from fenugreek, but nothing really spectacular.
  • Better Sexual Performance: It is first and foremost a male enhancing supplement, and there aren’t many things men want to enhance outside of muscle and charm. Based on the ingredients we found, Nugenix Total-T was definitely formulated with those things in mind.

What’s In It?

Now, let’s take a closer look at what’s inside Nugenix Total-T:

Testosterone Multiplication Blend

Vitamin B6 (as Pyridoxine Hydrochloride): Vitamin B6 is routinely added to many high quality pre-workouts and fat burners for its muscle energy metabolism benefits. As a testosterone ingredient, many markers of testosterone are correlated with B6 levels. Naturally, low vitamin B6 is linked to low testosterone. High B6 is linked to high or adequate testosterone. This makes adding Vitamin B6 in a testosterone boosting supplement logical and even cost-effective. [1]”Vitamin B6 deficient animals have either a reduced rate of synthesis of testosterone or an increased rate of metabolic clearance compared with vitamin B6 supplemented controls, and this appears to be associated with enhanced target organ response to the hormone.” We do mind the dosage. At 2 mg, you may have more than 100% per serving, but Vitamin B6 is also water-soluble. Being water-soluble means the body excretes it readily and explains why so many supplements put milligrams upon milligrams of Vitamin B6. The fact that it’s also water-soluble means it takes a lot to actually overdose on it.

Vitamin B12 (as Methylcobalamin): Similar to vitamin B6, vitamin B12 is also added in far too many supplements for it to not be a common sight. It’s also used for muscle energy metabolism and, just like vitamin B6, it takes a lot to overdose on it. As a testosterone ingredient, high levels of vitamin B12 is linked to adequate levels of testosterone. [2]”In this study, a considerable subset of men presenting with Chronic testicular pain benefit from depletion of B12 and/or testosterone. These data suggest that screening for B12 and testosterone deficiencies should be considered when evaluating men with Chronic testicular pain.“Many speculate that this particular instance is due to how many nutrients capable of boosting or maintaining testosterone are found in meat, and b12 is highly abundant in meat. This is not to say that vegans or vegetarians have low testosterone, though.

Zinc (as Zinc Chelate): Other than boron, zinc is the next mineral heavily linked to testosterone levels. Zinc plays a direct role in testosterone production. Adequate levels of Zinc can help boost testosterone levels. [3]”We conclude that androgen deficiency in adult male subjects with sickle cell anemia is correctable with zinc supplementation and that the determination of neutrophil zinc and alkaline phosphatase activity in the neutrophils may be utilized as good indicators of body zinc status in such subjects.“However, you can actually overdose on zinc quite easily, and overdosing can lead to a lot of risky side effects. With that said, the 1 mg dose is too small for it to have any real use in this blend. Not to mention the actual zinc content may not even be more than 40% like most chelated zinc ingredients.

Citrulline Malate: This is a really powerful pre-workout ingredient. In most supplements, you will find citrulline malate added under the nitric oxide or pump blends. What it does is it enhances nitric oxide production which then allows for better vasodilation. Vasodilation is an occurrence when your veins get bigger and allow more blood to pass through them. An increase in vasodilation, in a pre-workout context, is speculated to lead to performance benefits in the gym as well as giving muscles that “plump” or “swole” feeling. [4]”Collectively, citrulline-based ingredients appear to be more effective than arginine-based ingredients for modulating vasodilation and blood flow.

You might be thinking “what is a pre-workout ingredient doing in a testosterone booster?” In the context of a testosterone booster, let us first remember the primary market of testosterone boosters as well as why they buy them. The primary market of testosterone boosters are older men or men in their 40’s. At this age, testosterone decline is actually felt, with their quality of life affected – especially when it comes to romance. Low testosterone is not only linked to low libido, but also male problems like erectile dysfunction. When people buy testosterone boosting supplements, they often buy it for two things:

1. To increase their natural testosterone levels.

2. To help with libido and other sexual problems.

This is where taking citrulline malate comes in. As we previously discussed, citrulline malate helps enlarge the veins. Enlarged veins allow better blood flow. Erectile dysfunction can be sometimes characterized by a lack of blood flow to the penis. Put two and two together, and you get the idea as to why adding citrulline malate in a testosterone booster makes sense. If that wasn’t enough, notice the rather conservative dosage of citrulline malate. Normally, we would see citrulline malate in dosages of 4 grams or 8 grams in many pre-workouts. Here, we only have it at 1,125 mg. Is that good or bad? We think it’s alright. After all, you’re not exactly taking testosterone boosters with the intent of working out, right? That’s what pre-workouts and fat burners are for.

However, Nugenix Total-T did claim to also “reach your male performance potential” and to “Maximize your strength, muscle, energy, and endurance to take your workouts to the next level,” so we’re on the fence regarding the dosage.

Fenugreek Extract (seed) (50% Fenuside™) (Testofen®): Fenugreek is a popular testosterone ingredient known to help increase testosterone levels by inhibiting enzymes and other compounds that destroy or convert testosterone to other things that aren’t testosterone. [5]”In conclusion, Fenu-FG supplementation showed promising anabolic and androgenic effects in male subjects during 8 weeks of resistance training program in a double-blind randomized placebo-controlled study without serious adverse events.” Other than testosterone boosting, fenugreek is also known to aid with libido, some added fat burning and metabolism, and better libido function. There are also some added benefits to taking fenugreek like blood sugar management, appetite control, cholesterol level management, and reducing inflammation. However, it’s the herb’s effect on testosterone and libido that it’s really bought and taken for.

elevATP® Blend (Ancient Peat Extract (trace minerals) and Apple Fruit Extract): Now this one is definitely not something you take for testosterone. elevATP is a rather unique ingredient normally added to pre-workouts for its cellular energy benefits.

What it does mainly gives you a good energy boost without relying solely on stimulants.

There’s also an angle to some muscle performance benefits (because more energy equals better lifts), but these are complementary benefits more than the main reasons why they’re taken. [6]

“The proprietary blend of ancient peat and apple extracts were capable of increasing lower body and total strength as well as lower body power output compared at an equal-volume, visually-identical placebo. Moreover, the supplement was able to prevent performance decrements commonly associated with increased training volume and overreaching.”

From the perspective of a 40 something taking a testosterone booster, elevATP is useful for giving benefits to vigor or to have that “I feel young again” sort of sensation.

Eurycoma longifolia Extract (root): This herb is also known as Longjack. When you see the actual plant, you’ll realize why it’s taken for testosterone and libido benefits: The plant is quite phallic in structure (hence, longjack) and studies do point to the herb’s libido benefits.

Other than sexual benefits, studies also show its potential for testosterone boosting in two ways: It boosts testosterone levels and reduces cortisol. Cortisol is known as the stress hormone and it’s the antithesis to testosterone. More cortisol equals less testosterone and vice versa. Naturally, this makes Longjack a really good anti-stress herb. [7]

These results indicate that daily supplementation with tongkat ali root extract improves stress hormone profile and certain mood state parameters, suggesting that this “ancient” remedy may be an effective approach to shielding the body from the detrimental effects of “modern” chronic stress, which may include general day-to-day stress, as well as the stress of dieting, sleep deprivation, and exercise training.

The only problem we have for it is the dosage. 100 mg is just not that big to have any real significant effect on either testosterone or stress.

Boron (as Boron Glycinate): Boron is one of the best minerals to take if you really want to directly influence your testosterone levels. Boron acts on compounds that actually raise testosterone levels (such as magnesium and vitamin D – two nutrients Nugenix Total-T doesn’t have, which sucks) while also fighting testosterone inhibitors. Another good thing about Boron is how even in doses as small as 10 mg per day has shown benefits for testosterone levels. [8]

“After one week, the mean plasma free testosterone increased and the mean plasma estradiol decreased significantly. Dihydrotestosterone, cortisol and vitamin D was elevated. Also, concentrations of all three inflammatory biomarkers decreased after supplementation.”

Supplement Facts Label

Nugenix Total T Supplement Facts Label

It’s fair to say that Nugenix Total-T is more about helping the average 40-something in bed than really boosting testosterone. The ingredients added weren’t as potent as we expected, the herbs were more studied for their vigor and libido benefits than testosterone. Here’s what you can expect:

  • More libido: As we mentioned and analyzed, the benefits this supplement would confer would have to do more with libido improvements than long-term testosterone boosting. If you have trouble in bed, this may help with that.
  • Energy increase: The ingredients are shown to possibly help with physical performance.
  • A slight bump in testosterone: Despite the rather mild dosages and not really for testosterone ingredients, there are still some benefits for testosterone.

When it comes to testosterone boosters, the side effects are more about changes in mood and being a bit more aggressive than usual. However, the dosages and ingredients used won’t really give you these effects to a harmful or damaging level.

We always recommend you speak with your doctor before taking any supplements featured on this site.

How to Take It

Nugenix recommends taking Nugenix Total-T by simply taking three capsules daily with or without food. That’s it, no fancy serving suggestions or weird combinations and timing.

Nugenix Total-T is offered in capsule form, so there’s no real taste or flavor associated with it other than the taste of capsules. Most plain capsules taste like paper if that helps.

Number of Servings

One bottle of Nugenix Total-T has 90 capsules, but since you’ll be taking 3 capsules a day, this is only good for 30 days.

Top Alternative to This Product

Nugenix Total-T vs Irwin Naturals Testosterone UP RED

The best product to compare with Nugenix Total-T is Irwin Naturals Testosterone UP RED.

This is Irwin Naturals Testosterone UP RED’s formula:

  • Medium-chain triglyceride
  • Citrulline
  • Fenugreek
  • Tribulus Extract
  • Beta Sitosterols 40%
  • Ginkgo extract (24% flavone glycosides, 6% terpene lactones)(leaf)
  • Beet powder (root)
  • LJ100 Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia) extract (40% glycosaponins and 22% eurypeptides) (root)
  • Asian Ginseng extract (4% ginsenosides) (root)
  • BioPerine Complex BioPerine Black Pepper extract (95% piperine) (fruit), Ginger extract (5% gingerols) (root)

Testosterone UP RED’s formula is more complicated and perhaps more detailed with regards to attention to testosterone as well as libido.

It also has Citrulline like Nugenix Total-T, but also other ingredients that are great for testosterone production.

Which one is better? The clear winner is Testosterone UP RED for function as well as long-term effects. Nugenix Total-T is just too bare and too more about “romance” than it is for testosterone.

Not to mention the pricing is much better for Testosterone UP RED, being priced at just around $35.00 vs Nugenix Total-T’s $69.99.

Customer Feedback

We saw some reviews on Total-T and we were met with a mix of comments. The positive ones commended the supplement’s libido-boosting properties mostly as well as some boost in exercise performance. The negative ones reported no real effects inside the gym, but they did note that they have better erections. However, they also say if they just want something for erections, they would have chosen a cheaper product.

Bottom Line

Nugenix Total-T is more of a “romance” supplement than something you would take for exercise and testosterone. It has well-known ingredients that perform for testosterone, but the dosages don’t pair well with the potency we have.

The most you can get with the supplement are benefits that have to do with being in bed with a partner. It may still raise testosterone with repeated use, but we imagine it would be better if you just bought something cheaper as Nugenix Total-T is definitely pricey for its formula.
