Performance Lab Sleep
Performance Lab Sleep is a dietary supplement designed to help you get better, more restful sleep. It contains a blend of ingredients that may help to improve sleep quality and duration.
It also aims to be an alternative to other sleep aids, which may be habit-forming. Performance Lab Sleep is non-habit-forming and contains all gentle ingredients that shouldn’t cause daytime drowsiness or significant side effects.
Like all Performance Lab products, this supplement is non-GMO, vegan friendly, and free of synthetic additives, gluten, soy, and common allergens. It’s also GMP certified, which means the manufacturer has been independently certified to follow Good Manufacturing Practice protocol.
Let’s dive deeper into what this supplement claims to do, and what’s included in it, to learn if it might be a good choice for your needs.
What Performance Lab Sleep Claims to Do
Getting to Sleep
Performance Lab Sleep claims to help spur a more drowsy, relaxed mood that is ideal for falling asleep. The ingredient profile of this product supports this claim – namely when it comes to magnesium and tart cherry. Magnesium helps to create a sense of relaxation in mind and body. Tart cherry helps to increase melatonin levels, which naturally spurs relaxation and sleep.
Beyond helping you get to sleep, this product claims to help you get deeper, better quality sleep. Evidence suggests that those with a magnesium deficiency get lower quality sleep, so it’s logical to think that the magnesium in this product may help improve sleep quality. Tart cherry has also been noted to improve sleep quality and duration in test subjects.
Sleep claims to optimize nightly cell renewal to help you wake up feeling more refreshed. This claim does not have as much clinical support as the others. Cell renewal is a natural process in the body – and much of it happens during sleep. One could speculate that getting better sleep could improve cell renewal, but there is no definitive evidence to suggest that specific ingredients in this product boost cell renewal.
What’s In It
One serving of Performance Lab Mind contains:
- 100mg magnesium
- 500mg montmorency tart cherry
- 250mg L-tryptophan
Magnesium – Magnesium is a vital mineral for human health. It plays an important role in blood pressure regulation, bone strength, heart health, sleep, and more – it’s actually used in more than 600 cellular reactions in the body.
Magnesium has several effects on sleep. One angle is that magnesium helps spur relaxation in both mind and body. Magnesium activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for relaxation and parts of stress management. Magnesium also plays a role in the regulation of melatonin, a key hormone for sleep.
Additionally, studies have shown that not getting enough magnesium can disrupt sleep, even causing insomnia. It also affects sleep quality, with an animal study showing that magnesium deficiency lead to light, easily disrupted sleep patterns. Also, magnesium deficiency has been linked with depression and anxiety, which can also contribute to sleep issues. Considering that magnesium is a common deficiency, it’s possible that a lot of people’s issues with sleeping may be linked to their low magnesium intake.
In short, magnesium affects sleep in a wide variety of ways – and most people don’t get enough from their diets alone. Performance Lab Sleep contains 25% daily value of magnesium, which should help you reach an adequate intake of this key mineral.
Montmorency Tart Cherry – Montmorency tart cherry is a fruit that contains high levels of melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that is very important for sleep. Our bodies produce it naturally, but certain things – including blue light from digital screens – can reduce melatonin production. Thus, some people choose to take melatonin supplements, or products like sour cherry that help spur melatonin production.
The research on tart cherry for sleep is quite promising. One study of 20 volunteers showed significant increases total sleep time, amount of time spent in bed, total sleep time and sleep efficiency. In another study of adults with insomnia, tart cherry juice increased sleep time by an average of 85 minutes a night! Another study found tart cherry juice to be equally as effective as valerian and melatonin supplements, two common products used as sleep aids.
Keep in mind that these studies used whole tart cherry juice, while Performance Lab Sleep contains a concentrated extract of the same fruit. The difference is unlikely to be significant, but it’s worth noting that these linked studies didn’t specifically use the form of tart cherry used in Sleep.
L-Tryptophan – L-Tryptophan is an amino acid. It is found naturally in certain foods. When consumed, L-tryptophan is converted by the body into 5-HTP, and later into melatonin, serotonin and vitamin B6.
A clinical review of L-tryptophan found that most studies showed beneficial effects on sleepiness and the amount of time it took to fall asleep. Effects were most noteworthy in patients with insomnia. Some studies showed no effect, mostly in subjects with normal sleep patterns and no sign of chronic insomnia.
Although it appears beneficial in spurring sleep, WebMD notes that L-tryptophan is potentially unsafe to take on a regular basis. It shows more possibility for side effects than the other ingredients in this product.
For Best Results
To get the best results possible from this product and to get better sleep, it’s important to practice good sleep hygiene. That means getting to bed a reasonable hour, avoiding caffeine in the afternoon, and avoiding screen time at night.
In short, Performance Lab Sleep appears to help some people sleep – but you’ll find better success if you also follow best practices for sleep hygiene.
Potential Side Effects
Like most supplements, this product has the potential to cause some side effects. To get an idea, we can look at the possible side effects for each included ingredient:
- Magnesium can cause diarrhea, cramps and nausea.
- Montmorency tart cherry can cause diarrhea and abdominal discomfort
- L-tryptophan can cause gas, stomach pain, headache, loss of appetite, nausea, heartburn, dry mouth, drowsiness, muscle weakness and more. In rare cases it can cause eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome, but it appears that these cases were mostly linked to a batch of contaminated L-tryptophan made by a specific manufacturer.
In the end, this appears to be a well-formulated supplement that may help with sleep. None of the ingredients are habit forming, which is very important for sleep aids.
Both magnesium and tart cherry appear to be quite effective in spurring better sleep and have very few notable side effects. L-tryptophan also appears effective in some situations, although it has a higher potential for side effects.
Bottom line, this appears to be a worthwhile product to try out if you are looking to improve your sleep quality. Be sure to also work on your sleep hygiene practices!
