Everyone relates to feeling all tired and wanting to call it a day, but we can’t because it’s still a few hours away before we’re allowed to go home. You may think about coffee, but it gives you bad headaches. Well, we know one supplement that can help. It’s called Performance Lab Stim.

Performance Lab Stim claims to help energize your brain without the usual side effects of caffeine. Can they substantiate this claim? What else can it do? Read our review to find out.

Who Makes It?

Stim is sold by Performance Lab. It is a company known to produce some of the best nootropics in the market, including its flagship nootropic product, Performance Lab Mind.

Marketing Claims Made

The following claims were made about Performance Lab Stim:

  • No jitters and crash. The formula seems to be designed to prevent these two side effects.
  • Smarter and cleaner. Their caffeine is from a natural source, has premium brands for theanine and tyrosine – both brain boosting supplements.
  • Vegan formula. The capsule is patented for this purpose.

What’s in it?

Now, let’s take a closer look at what’s inside Performance Lab Stim:

NutriGenesis Caffeine Balance B-Complex

  • Riboflavin (Vitamin B2): Specific proteins in the body rely upon B2 to function optimally. Deficiencies in riboflavin can result in a condition called ariboflavinosis. This condition is described as various ailments of the mouth and throat as well as eye and skin. You can get riboflavin from diet, but some studies suggest benefits of supplementation for cardiovascular health, especially with elevated blood pressure levels. [1]
  • Vitamin B6: This is normally added for muscle store replenishment in pre-workout supplements, but in the case of Performance Lab Stim, they added vitamin B6 to help counteract the reducing effects of caffeine on B-Vitamins. B6 is known to support serotonin and norepinephrine production as well as dopamine conversion. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter required for us to feel calm and happy. Norepinephrine is a neurotransmitter required for us to feel vigilant, alert, and be focused on any task. Dopamine helps keep us motivated and makes us feel good about ourselves. [2]
  • Folate (Vitamin B9): Folate is an essential vitamin and is more commonly referred to as folic acid. It’s found in low doses in a variety of plant-based food products, folate is responsible for the growth of newborn children as well as support a process called methylation in adults. It’s also popularly used as a pregnancy supplement, as many experts recommend women to take 400 mcg of folic acid daily not just for the child, but to also prepare their body for possible symptoms of childbirth which can include folate deficiency. The 167 mcg dose is just good enough for daily function because you can actually overdose on folate and puts users at risk for colon cancer. [3]
  • Vitamin B12: Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin and can be found in several forms depending on what it binds to: cyanocobalamin, methylcobalamin, deoxyadenosylcobalamin, and hydroxycobalamin. It is found in trace amounts in food, particularly meat. It is also regularly supplemented in multivitamins and gym supplements. Some of its functions include the synthesis of methionine (a compound that can help lower risks of heart disease) and succinyl CoA (which helps with energy metabolism). There is currently little danger in possibly overdosing vitamin B12 since it’s water-soluble and is easily excreted through urination. During exercise, muscles also metabolize vitamin B12 which explains its necessity in many supplements. [4]
  • Natural Caffeine (from Coffea Robusta seeds): When they say natural caffeine, they mean it’s not caffeine anhydrous, the most popular form of caffeine added in almost every gym supplement ever created. Caffeine anhydrous is cheap and easily mass-produced while natural sources of caffeine are difficult to extract which also makes it more expensive. We only have 50 mg of caffeine here and comparing it to workout supplements makes it really weak. However, Performance Lab Stim isn’t a workout supplement as much as it is a brain and focus supplement. Depending on your tolerance, 50 mg may be good enough or too mild to be of any effect. This explains why Performance Lab Stim suggests taking only up to five capsules for a total of 250 mg caffeine a day. For context, 250 mg caffeine is just 50 mg shy of the equivalent of three cups of coffee. [5]
  • Suntheanine L-Theanine: Theanine is what many refer to as an anti-caffeine. It’s often added in many gym supplements to help suppress the possible side effects brought about by heavy doses of stimulants, with caffeine being the most popular. However, in Performance Lab Stim, its function is more about what it actually is: a nootropic. As a nootropic, theanine is known to promote wakeful relaxation, enhanced creativity, and reduced anxiety while also improving mood. It also should be noted that theanine isn’t sedative at all, so you don’t have to worry about falling asleep on the job or while studying if you plan on supplementing with theanine. [6]
  • Ajipure L-Tyrosine: Tyrosine is another nootropic added for the stress and focus benefits. According to Performance Lab, their Tyrosine helps to reduce the neurotransmitter changes caffeine induces, specifically an increase in catecholamine demand to produce the stimulant’s familiar effects. Tyrosine helps synthesize and recycle catecholamine, reducing the risks of attention problems, mood imbalances, and crashing. [7]

Supplement Facts Label

Performance Lab Stim Supplement Facts Label

Initially, Performance Lab Stim looks just like some glorified caffeine pill. We also thought that too, but a closer inspection made us see it at a better light.

On the surface, Performance Lab Stim is just a plain stimulant that helps keep users going when they want to work harder, but also don’t want to drink coffee. At its core, however, it’s actually a brain stimulant that doesn’t rely on caffeine as much as it does on the chemicals inside your brain.

In a way, caffeine only acts as a starter, the sparkplug that gets the engine going. The rest of the supplement pushes for brain chemical production and maximum efficiency.

We think the supplement works best for those who will not take it as a gym supplement, but as a perk-me-up in a bottle.

The usual precaution would often fall on caffeine, but not this time. At 50 mg, caffeine is tamed and on a leash. Adding theanine to an already small caffeine presence just makes any stim side effect almost irrelevant.

Although we also recognize that some people may not be at home with using caffeine, especially if they have conditions that may not make stimulant use suited for them even in mild dosages.

We always recommend you speak with your doctor before taking any supplements featured on this site.

How to Take It

According to their website, Performance Lab Stim is suggested to be taken initially as one capsule for stimulation. Taken as directed, the product’s 50 mg caffeine serving size is effective for most.

They also suggest that for people who may have higher tolerances for caffeine, such as those with regular coffee drinkers, they may take additional Stim NutriCaps in 50 mg caffeine increment up to 250 mg or five NutriCaps per day, due to the formula’s scalable design.

It doesn’t really have a taste or flavor given that it’s in capsule form. The most you can expect would be the typical capsule taste.

Number of Servings

One bottle has 30 servings. One serving 1 NutriCap.

Top Alternative to This Product

Performance Lab Stim vs Sym Nutrition Focus Now

One of the best products to rival Stim is Focus Now.

Unlike Stim, Focus Now only has:

  • 100 mg Caffeine
  • 200 mg Theanine

This stack is basic and is well known throughout the supplement world as a good “starter” formula. This supplement is also much cheaper given that the ingredients are in their basic form.

Which one is better? It depends on two things: Function and Budget.

Function-wise, we think Stim is superior. It has more brain-boosting and brain health benefits that go beyond what you’re currently taking it for.

Budget-wise, we have to go with Focus Now. It’s about $10 cheaper with three times the number of servings. Again, this is a simple stack and you can easily build one if you have a supply.

Customer Feedback

Most online reviews on Performance Lab Stim were positive. They like how it’s more than just caffeine and how it doesn’t rely on it either to work. Once again, the criticism on the supplement is the price.

Performance Lab Stim is clean-cut and has a premium feel. It’s not reliant on caffeine and boasts of brain benefits that are more than just alertness and stimulation.
