Performance Lab Vision

Performance Lab Vision is a dietary supplement designed to support eye health, and to promote certain aspects of vision. It contains a blend of 7 ingredients, chosen for their unique effects on the ways our eyes function and perform.

Vision is of course a key part of our lives. Vision naturally changes as we age, and significant shifts in eyesight can occur for any number of reasons. Typically, there are few active steps you can take to protect your vision long-term – but Performance Lab claims that their Vision product can help protect eyesight.

Let’s dive in and learn more about this product – starting with what it claims to do.

What Performance Lab Vision Claims to Do

Eye Health

Performance Lab Vision claims to support macular health and the overall health of our vision. Based on the ingredient profile, this claim appears to be accurate.

Several ingredients included in Vision show promise in protecting eye health. Black currant has been shown to slow the progression of certain eye diseases and disorders, lutein appears to protect against cataracts, and zeaxanthin may help reduce the risk of macular degeneration. All these factors point to a better likelihood of good overall eye health.

Reduced Eye Fatigue

Vision claims to help reduce eye strain and fatigue from computer use and other applications. This claim appears to not be too crazy, although more evidence would be beneficial. One study showed that some of the ingredients in Vision (combined with others) helped to reduce eye fatigue. Black currant also shows promise in reducing eye strain and fatigue. More research is needed, but this claim is reasonable.

Eyesight

Vision claims to help improve your night vision, glare resistance, motion detection, and reaction time. These claims are not fully supported by clinical research. Some ingredients show a slight potential for improvements in certain aspects of vision, but overall this particular claim is not backed up by science.

What’s In It

One serving of Performance Lab Vision contains:

  • 300mg European freeze-dried blackcurrant
  • 25mg European blackcurrant extract
  • 25mg European bilberry extract
  • 10mg Lutein (from marigold flower extract)
  • 2mg Zeaxanthin (from marigold flower extract)
  • 1mg Astaxanthin
  • 1mg Saffron

European Black Currant Black currant is a type of berry that is popular in many areas of the world. It contains high concentrations of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Black currant can be beneficial for a number of health applications, including vision. This supplement contains both freeze-dried black currant and a concentrated extract made from black currant.

In clinical trials looking at black currant, the plant has been found to help increase blood flow to the eyes, slow the progression of certain eye diseases, improve night vision, and reduce the symptoms of eye fatigue. Black currant also contains high concentration of GLA and linoleic acid, which are linked to improvements in dry eye syndrome.

European Bilberry Extract Bilberry is a plant, and its leaves and fruit are used to make medicine and supplements. It’s a rich source of anthocyanosides, chemical compounds with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Bilberry’s connection to vision comes largely from an urban legend – that bomber pilots in World War II consumed bilberry tea, and proceeded to gain superior night vision which aided in the war effort. An interesting story – but one that hasn’t been proven or supported by clinical evidence.

Despite the questionable nature of this story, bilberry may still have some benefits to vision. They appear to be beneficial in addressing eye conditions related to inflammation, including retinopathy and macular degeneration. Some studies have shown promise in bilberry’s effect on retinal inflammation, but most studies have been small or animal-based. In short, more research is needed.

Lutein Lutein is a carotenoid vitamin that’s found naturally in some foods. It’s often considered an “eye vitamin”, thanks to its effects on vision health. Lutein appears to be beneficial for cataracts, reducing the need for cataract surgery by 32% in one study. Lutein and zeaxanthin may also help to absorb blue and ultraviolet light, which helps reduce damage to your eyes.

Zeaxanthin – Zeaxanthin is another carotenoid vitamin that’s usually found alongside lutein (in this supplement, they both come from a marigold flower extract). Zeaxanthin may help reduce the risk of macular degeneration, a serious eye health concern. Both lutein and zeaxanthin are antioxidants found naturally in the tissues of the eye, and data suggests that increasing levels of these two carotenoids in your eyes may be beneficial.

Astaxanthin – Astaxanthin is another carotenoid that’s found in algae and fish. It’s a potent antioxidant, and it has many applications in alternative medicine for addressing a number of symptoms. One study looking at astaxanthin combined with several other ingredients found that it helped to decrease eye fatigue – but again, this study did not isolate astaxanthin. An animal study showed that astaxanthin helped protect retinal cells from oxidative damage – but no human studies have been conducted to verify this result. More research is needed.

Saffron Saffron is a spice popular in Indian cuisine. There is limited evidence to support saffron’s use in countering age-related macular degeneration. More research is needed.

Potential Side Effects

Like most supplements, there is a potential for side effects with this product. For an idea, we can look at the possible side effects of each ingredient:

  • Black currant can cause diarrhea, gas, and soft stools.
  • Bilberry extract can cause rare allergic reactions. Otherwise, side effects are minimal.
  • Lutein does not typically cause any side effects.
  • Zeaxanthin does not typically cause side effects.
  • Astaxanthin does not typically cause side effects.
  • Saffron does not typically cause side effects, although allergic reactions are possible.

Overall, considering the ingredient profile of this product, the risk of side effects from Performance Lab Vision appears to be low.

Bottom Line

Overall, this is an interesting supplement that may be beneficial in supporting eye health. Some of the bolder claims about the product being able to actually improve your vision are questionable – but it does appear that these ingredients can help protect vision.

If you’re looking for a way to protect your eyes, this is a supplement worth trying.
