When it comes to hormones, men probably value testosterone above all, and with good reason. Testosterone is the very hormone responsible for muscle growth, facial hair, and pretty much anything that involves strength. It also plays a role in other aspects of men’s health.

However, the inconvenient truth is men begin to decrease testosterone production when they hit a certain age above 30. Some are fortunate enough to not have the decline until they’re 40.

Regardless of when a man has it, testosterone decline is inevitable.

Because of this, testosterone supplements are available and Testogen is one of those products making some noise in this category.

Testogen promises to give your body a good testosterone boost without the help of artificial or controversial ingredients.

They also claim to give you strength, focus, and better sexual performance.

The question now is, does Testogen work as advertised?

Who Makes It?

Testogen is produced by Wolfson Berg Limited, a company based in the UK with a branch in Cyprus. On their website, they showcase the people they sought advice regarding the formulation behind Testogen as well as invite influencers to be part of their affiliate program [1].

Marketing Claims Made

The following claims were made about Testogen:

  • Strength and stamina increase: While an increase in testosterone production should lead to a better sense of strength and endurance, the fact is Testogen doesn’t have any ingredients that directly influence strength and stamina. The point of a testosterone supplement is to simply boost testosterone production naturally, and strength and stamina are the bonuses. To say taking Testogen will result in this claim is quite misleading.
  • Sharpened focus: The only quasi-nootropic ingredient in Testogen is ginseng due to its effects on stress. However, that’s a bit of a reach considering the original intent of adding ginseng in your testosterone formula.
  • Boost libido: This one is the only claim we think is founded on solid evidence. Zinc, vitamin D, DAA, and Boron have all been shown to help with libido one way or another. However, we also think the dosages are a bit on the lower end, and this makes us a bit skeptical.

What’s in it?

Now, let’s take a closer look at what’s inside Testogen:

  • Vitamins and Minerals: As with many supplements in its category, Testogen recognizes the importance of having adequate vitamin and mineral stores especially for those who plan on taking Testogen for gym purposes. The notable ingredients in this blend are Vitamin D and Zinc because of their high potency forms. For Vitamin D, the exact form of vitamin D we produce via sunlight is vitamin D3 or cholecalciferol. Because this is the form we produce when we’re exposed to sunlight, it’s naturally the best in terms of bioavailability. For Zinc, we have it bound to citrate which gives us 61.3% absorption [2]. With regard to testosterone, both vitamin D and zinc have clinical studies that cite their overall contribution to testosterone production in humans. Having low levels of zinc is linked to hypogonadism [3] and high levels of vitamin D is linked to an increase in total testosterone [4].
  • D-Aspartic Acid: This testosterone booster is commonly referred to as DAA. DAA is perhaps one of the best ingredients you can have in a testosterone booster. Studies have shown that supplementation can increase testosterone levels by as much as 42% in just 12 days [5]. While the form itself is decent, we prefer D-Aspartic-Acid-Calcium-Chelate or D-AA-CC which has better bioavailability.
  • Nettle Leaf Extract: Nettle leaf helps block testosterone-specific enzymes from converting testosterone to something that isn’t testosterone [6]. The 4:1 ratio paired with its mild 40 mg dosing is actually pretty weak compared to the more “elite” ratio of 10:1.
  • Korean Red Ginseng Extract: Cortisol, the stress hormone, lowers testosterone levels. Korean Red Ginseng here, which acts as an adaptogen, helps lower cortisol levels which indirectly increases testosterone content in the body [7].
  • Boron as Boron Citrate: For testosterone, boron works in two ways. It helps improve the absorption of pro-testosterone vitamin D while also reducing enzymes that lower overall testosterone levels. In one study, boron was cited to elicit a significant increase in testosterone after one week of supplementation [8]. While boron does work in small doses, the form used isn’t the right one to pair with 8 mg in terms of bioavailability.
  • Black Pepper Extract (95% Piperine) as BioPerine: Black pepper is sometimes regarded as that one food spice that changes everything in a recipe. In supplements, it’s considered a premium ingredient especially as the branded form of BioPerine. Its active ingredient piperine helps the body absorb just about every compound it comes in contact with [9].

Testogen Supplement Facts Label

Testogen Supplement Facts Label

Testogen offers a lot of the usual benefits that you may get from a standard testosterone supplement. You may feel energized, motivated, and perhaps even have a better overall metabolism thanks to the testosterone boost.

While the forms and dosing weren’t the best we’ve seen, we still think Testogen justified the claims they made, though we do wish they justified it better.

The best way to maximize Testogen is to either be in your 40s – the age where testosterone decline is felt – or if you’re diagnosed with low testosterone. We recommend it this way because most of its ingredients work best on those who have low testosterone levels.

It should be noted that there is such a thing as zinc toxicity, and the 100% DV for zinc is listed at 15 mg officially [10]. Testogen offers 91% DV of zinc and while in most cases the actual values are lower, it’s better to err on the safe side and stop taking any supplements that may supply excess amounts of the mineral. Zinc toxicity is known to cause prostate problems and a weaker immune system [11].

We always recommend you speak with your doctor before taking any supplements featured on this site.

How to Take It

Testogen recommends taking four capsules of their supplement 20 minutes before breakfast. They also said to take Testogen on both workout and non-workout days.

Testogen comes in capsule form and the Other Ingredients didn’t list any ingredient known to add flavor in any way. So, no real taste other than what a generic capsule tastes like.

Number of Servings

One container has 30 servings or 120 total capsules.

Top Alternative to This Product

Testogen vs TestoFuel

Based on ingredients and pricing, Testogen’s rival in the industry is Testofuel.

Like Testogen, Testofuel also has a focused formula utilizing only nine total ingredients including vitamins and minerals. Also like Testogen, Testofuel also has:

  • Vitamin D3
  • Vitamin K
  • Vitamin B6
  • Magnesium
  • Zinc
  • DAA
  • Ginseng

In terms of dosing, TestoFuel has the upper hand with each of the mentioned ingredients except DAA, but the difference isn’t that large.

Other than formula, Testogen and Testofuel also have a similar serving suggestion with both supplements recommending four capsules per day, every day.

However, we think TestoFuel’s approach – to take one capsule four times daily with a meal – is a little better given the key vitamins and minerals associated with testosterone boosting is absorbed better with food. Not to mention a possible “sustained boost” effect throughout the day for TestoFuel.

Between Testogen and TestoFuel, we think TestoFuel has a better formula and serving strategy. However, it is slightly more expensive than Testogen, so do consider that.

Customer Feedback

We checked out reviews over at Amazon and other consumer review sites and found that people have mixed results on whether Testogen is a good product or not. Many users rate it at around 3.5 stars which we think is quite fitting given the generic formula as well as the lower than average dosing on the key ingredients.

Some of the critics say the benefits wear off after the second week and they suggest it may be due to building a tolerance.

Bottom Line

When it comes to supplements in general, ingredient forms matter after dosages. There could be times when a large dosing can offset generic ingredients, but there can only be so much powder you can fit inside a capsule.

In Testogen’s case, it had a high-quality formula but the low bioavailability of its key ingredients reduced its overall testosterone boosting effect by a significant amount.

Testogen is what we would classify as a “moderate” testosterone supplement. It’s not something we consider as an elite product, but it’s not so bad that we would recommend against taking it. And most of our criticism comes from its generic formulation and lackluster dosing.
