RawSeries Beta-Alanine Overview
RawSeries Beta-Alanine is another entry in Transparent Lab’s wildly popular RawSeries of training and exercise supplements that is purported to decrease muscle fatigue during strength training and to improve performance during athletic training and competition, particularly in “burst” events involving maximum exertion that takes place over a period of four minutes or less (e.g. 100 meter sprint or mile run).
In this article we’ll first take a look at what beta-alanine is, how it can help boost performance during both strength and endurance training, and then look at how well beta-alanine lives up to the claims being made by its advocates.

What is Beta-Alanine?
Beta-alanine belongs to a class of proteins known as the non-essential amino acids. Amino acids are the fundamental building blocks of the proteins, the substances that are the second-largest component of the human body (with water being the largest). A non-essential amino acid is any amino acid that the body is capable of producing internally versus an essential amino acid, which the body cannot produce internally and must therefore be ingested as food. In other words, a non-essential amino acid is largely composed of essential amino acids and their metabolic byproducts.
Beta-alanine is unique in that it is the precursor (“building block”) substance to the body’s own exercise tolerance-enhancing chemical that is produced naturally in all the body’s cells, but more so in muscle tissue. Although the explanation of how this happens is slightly longer than might seem important, it will help understand why beta-alanine should be part of every serious weight- and athletic-training program.
How Does Beta-Alanine Work?
Before we can understand how beta-alanine works, we need to look at what happens when muscle tissue is subjected to a workout.
When we exercise, one of the immediate effects is that the individual muscle cells demand more energy. Inside each cell, smaller structures called mitochondria struggle to meet this demand by producing more of a substance called adenosine triphosphate (ATP). As ATP is broken down in meeting this demand, one of the substances released is water (plain old H2O water).
As energy demand increases the cell’s demand for energy outstrips its available supply of oxygen and certain enzymes within the cell “steal” the oxygen atom from the water molecule, leaving the two hydrogen atoms behind. Since free hydrogen atoms are what makes an acid, the internal environment of the cell soon becomes acidic (in chemical language, the pH drops).
Since a low pH interferes with the removal of cellular waste, the cell soon simply stops working until conditions return to normal. Fortunately, the cell also contains a substance called carnosine.
Carnosine’s function in the cell is to absorb the free hydrogen atoms so that the pH can return to normal levels and the cell will be able to do what it is supposed to do. The primary source of carnosine just happens to be beta-alanine!

From the above discussion, it should be obvious that if some carnosine is good then a little more carnosine can make a positive difference in your workouts by increasing the number of reps you perform or by decreasing your recovery time after those wind sprints.
