How many times can you sell a really good product? For Vital Proteins, it appears to be three. We’ve seen Collagen Peptides powder from cowhide, marine collagen peptides from white fish, and now we have Collagen Water. Yes, a literal beverage made up of collagen.

Coming in at 1-bottle, 4-pack, and a 16-pack, it seems Vital Proteins want their Collagen Water to be something you can either keep in the fridge for a long time or share with friends.

Can Collagen Water quench your thirst for collagen supplementation? Let’s find out!

Who Makes It?

Collagen Water is sold by Vital Proteins. Vital Proteins is a supplement company that seems to base its products from sustainable and environmentally friendly sources and processes [1]. They seem to want to conquer all the collagen peptide space with this move on a beverage medium.

Marketing Claims Made

The following claims were made about Collagen Water

  • High bioavailability: While marine sources are more bioavailable than a lot of collagen products, the fact that this comes in the form of a beverage means you won’t have problems absorbing the collagen.
  • Hair, skin, nails, and joint benefits: It has the standard collagen benefits, but perhaps at a lesser potency compared to actual powder and capsules.
  • No artificial stuff: They used exactly 3 grams of sugar. We’re sure the product probably doesn’t taste good without sugar, but it does make some consumers wonder if something non-caloric (more on calories here) would have been a better option.
  • Ready To Drink: You likely still need to shake it, but yeah it is ready to drink.

What’s in it?

Now, let’s take a closer look at what’s inside Marine Collagen Peptides:

  • Collagen Peptides: Collagen peptides can be sourced from either animal sources like cattle, kelp, or even fish in the case of marine collagen [2]. It’s not clearly stated where they sourced the collagen for Collagen Water, but we don’t have a reason to doubt that it’s from another environmentally-friendly source as with their other collagen products.
  • Fruit juice: Depending on the flavor you get, you might have anywhere from 5% to 19% juice. The benefits of fruit concentrates are well known, but again it depends on which flavor you choose and the concentration [3].
  • Hibiscus extract: If you like tea, there’s a chance you’ve heard of hibiscus. This is a flower that’s been shown to have some cardioprotective benefits, especially on hypertension and hyperlipidemia [4].
  • Monk Fruit: A popular alternative sweetener to sugar. It’s sweeter than sugar but contains much, much fewer calories per serving. This makes monk fruit a trendy ingredient for many types of sweetened products that want to do away with table sugar [5].

Benefits

Of all the mediums we’ve seen collagen peptides is, it’s only natural that the ready to drink beverage has the least collagen concentration. It only has 10 grams per serving of protein compared to some of the Vital Proteins products that have at least 20 grams per serving.

So, what does collagen do for the body?

  1. It keeps your skin looking young: Collagen supplements all want to promote a youthful look and studies agree [6].
  2. Anti-inflammatory: Collagen peptides are naturally anti-inflammatory, meaning they can help reduce joint swelling and some muscle pain [7].
  3. Promotes lean muscle mass: Muscle is composed of roughly 10% collagen. Muscle loss is a particular concern for older adults, and supplementation can delay this age-related condition [8].
  4. Cardioprotective benefits: Researchers say taking collagen might be involved in helping prevent a heart attack. [9].
  5. Hair and nails: Our hair and nails are made up of collagen. Thus, supplementing with collagen can lead to healthier growth, prevent brittleness, and breakage [10].

Precautions

For the most part, collagen supplements, in general, are regarded as safe for consumption. However, they didn’t mention anything about its source, so if you notice anything funny such as skin irritations, stop drinking it.

We always recommend you speak with your doctor before taking any supplements featured on this site.

How to Take It

The best selling point of Collagen Water is the ease of consumption. It’s literally ready to drink. Just twist, sip, and repeat.

Taste/Flavors

Collagen Water is available in six different fruity flavors:

  • Original (lemon)
  • Lemon Ginger
  • Blackberry Hibiscus
  • Peach White Tea
  • Blueberry Mint
  • Strawberry Lemon

Number of Servings

One bottle has about 1 serving.

Top Alternative to This Product

Harmony Proteins Bioactive Beauty Collagen vs Vital Proteins Collagen Water

There isn’t much when it comes to products that rival Collagen Water since it’s a really specific niche. However, we did chance upon a brand called Harmony Proteins and their Bioactive Beauty Collagen.

Harmony Proteins describes their product as made with natural ingredients and sweetened with natural fruit essences. They also mention that you never have to worry about any added sugars, artificial flavors, colors, preservatives, or additives.

The only key ingredient in Bioactive Beauty Collagen is collagen peptides from bovines, boasting of a minimalistic approach to the formula. However, the stinger is it only has 5 grams collagen peptides against Vital Proteins Collagen Water’s 10 grams. It’s only slightly cheaper too.

Which one is better? We think Vital Proteins Collagen Water blows this one out of the water. It has better collagen content and a price tag relative to the benefits. Plus, Collagen Water is ready to drink whereas Harmony Proteins Bioactive Beauty Collagen Water is an instant mix.

Customer Feedback

Customers love the taste and the not-so-sweet flavors. Critics complain about the chunks of powder at the bottom of the bottle which is possibly due to sedimentation caused by not being shaken for a long time while in storage. Some also didn’t like the texture, describing it to be chalk-like.

Bottom Line

Collagen in a bottle is as convenient as it can get. No more scoops, no more messy countertops, and no more shake bottle washing. Just twist open a bottle of Collagen Water, drink, and you’re good to go.

The only problem we see here is the price tag. At almost $5.00 per bottle, it’s really not the most cost-effective collagen product out there. A month’s supply can easily cost $100, and people might not stick around once they do the math.
