Frequently Asked Questions About Kudzu Supplements

What is Kudzu?

A vine that twines around other trees, Kudzu (or pueraria lobata)  is part of the pea family, and it is native to China and Japan. (1) Kudzu has edible, starchy roots, which is one of the reasons it is cultivated in kudzu’s native countries. Its stems can be made into fibres for cloth, it can be used ornamentally and as a fodder crop for livestock. (1)

The plant grows aggressively outside of its native range — in the United states, it’s considered an invasive species. (2) Nicknamed the “mile-a-minute” vine, it can grow up to a foot in one day during the summer season, and can hit a total of 100 feet long. (3) The use of Kudzu became widespread in the U.S. by the 1900s for erosion control.

Kudzu has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. (4) Kudzu root has been used to treat fever, acute dysentery, thirst, diarrhea, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases for over 2,000 years. (5)

The plant contains over 70 phytochemicals, includings a number of isoflavonoids.  (5) The compounds of interest include puerarin, genistein, formononetin, glycitein and kakkalide. (6)

Animal and cellular studies have shown promise for kudzu’s ability to treat cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and endocrine problems, including diabetes. However, more human research is necessary to develop effective medicine from kudzu that can help manage diabetes and treat cardiovascular diseases.  (5)

What Are the Benefits of Kudzu?

The kudzu root, flower and leaf are all used to make herbal medicines. Some of the uses of kudzu include:

  • Cardiovascular health: Some studies suggest kudzu may help support cardiovascular health, but more research is necessary to prove benefits. One of the major bioactive ingredients in kudzu, called puerarin, has been researched for its pharmacological effects. A medical review found that it has heart protecting benefits, and the ability to help decrease blood pressure by dilating blood vessels. (7) Additionally, animal and cellular studies of kudzu have supported its use for cardiovascular health.  (5)
  • Diabetes: Type 2 diabetes is an increasingly common disease that occurs when the body no longer uses the hormone insulin properly. Insulin helps break down blood sugar, and those with type 2 diabetes have insulin resistance, resulting in high blood sugar levels. (8) Some animal studies using models of insulin resistance suggest kudzu may improve the breakdown of blood sugar. (9) However, much more research is needed.
  • Alcoholism: Kudzu supplements have been promoted as a treatment for alcoholism, but the research is mixed on its efficacy. One study found that kudzu extract reduces alcohol consumption in non-treatment seeking male heavy drinkers, possibly by increasing the intoxicating effects of alcohol thus reducing the amount needed to achieve the same effect. (10) Another study found similar effects — it reduced male alcohol consumption during binge-drinking. (11) However, another study found that kudzu extract does not enhance the intoxicating effects of alcohol. (12)
  • Headaches:  Anecdotal evidence suggests kudzu may be a beneficial headache treatment, and that a randomized clinical trial should be conducted. Kudzu is often promoted for headache relief, so many patients afflicted with cluster headaches take kudzu supplements, according to a 2009 study. (13) This research identified 16 patients using kudzu and interviewed them, finding that 11 experienced decreased intensity of attacks, nine had decreased frequency and five had decreased duration.

How Do I Take Kudzu?

Lack of research means that there is no defined dosage for kudzu supplements. However, research has used doses of 1.5 to 3 grams kudzu root extract divided into three daily doses for durations of up to four weeks. (14) Follow the dosing instructions on your particular product, or the advice of a doctor.

Are There Any Side Effects and Precautions?

Some side effects of kudzu may include skin itchiness, stomach upset and dizziness. The supplement is typically well tolerated, but like anything else, adverse reactions are possible.

How Do I Pick a Good Kudzu Product?

The most researched kudzu species is pueraria lobata, so make sure you are aware of the type of kudzu used in your product. Additionally, check for added ingredients — the fewer, the better. Depending on what works best for you, consider whether you are interested in a kudzu pill, tablet, liquid extract or powder.
