How to Pick a Good Testosterone Booster
Since testosterone boosters are such a broad and vague class of sports supplements, it can be extremely difficult to know which ones are worth your money and which ones are garbage.
Here are a few questions to keep in mind when shopping for your next testosterone booster:
Ingredients
Does the manufacturer include ingredients that have been proven to work, such as zinc, vitamin D, and tribulus terrestris?
Head to the “List of Testosterone Boosting Ingredients to Look For” section of this guide to see which ingredients you should specifically be looking for!
Dosage
Are all of the ingredients in the product adequately dosed? For example, if you see that D-Aspartic Acid (a very popular testosterone booster ingredient) is listed on the Supplement Facts panel, you want the dosage to be in the range of 2,000mg-3,000mg in order to see the best results.
Our “Recommended Dosages” section will tell you specifically what to look for when it comes to the most prevalent and effective ingredients found in the highest quality testosterone boosters.
Value
What’s the price point compared to other testosterone boosters with similar ingredient formulations? Make sure the prices aren’t too far off from one another. Prices vary between manufacturers, but remember, they must remain in the same ballpark in order to remain competitive with one another.
Quantity
Does the product packaging include enough of the supplement so that you can take it for as long as you intend to without running out? Check to see if the manufacturer offers any sort of special deals for ordering multiple containers of the product.
Product Form
- What form does the product come in? Capsules? Tablets?
- How many do you have to take per serving, per day?
- Are you willing to take the amount recommended by the manufacturer? Or is it an absurd amount according to your standards and lifestyle?
User Feedback
How do recent purchasers of the product like it? Check popular review websites such as Google, Bodybuilding.com, TrustPilot, and Better Business Bureau in order to get a better understanding of what others like and don’t like about the product
Brand Reputation
There are hundreds of testosterone supplements out there in every shape, form, and color. But it’s important to know what you’re actually putting into your body. What about the brand behind the supplement? Is it well-known and trusted? Or did it seem to crop up overnight and gain a sudden influx of five-star reviews? If you’re not sure, ask around and do thorough research before buying.
What Ingredients To Look for in a Testosterone Booster
While there are many different ingredients used in testosterone booster supplements, there are several key ingredients to keep an eye out for. The ingredients that are about to be presented to you are listed here due to the fact that they contain the most solid evidence behind their effectiveness.
The list is as follows:
D-Aspartic Acid
D-Aspartic Acid works to increase testosterone by causing the release of potent hormones such as luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, and growth hormone [3]. These hormones are all involved in the cascade of hormones responsible for the creation of testosterone, which begins in the hypothalamus of the brain with these three key hormones. This eventually causes the accumulation of testosterone in the testicles of men, which, in turn, causes an increase in testosterone when supplemented on a consistent basis.
Tribulus Terrestris
There is some controversy amongst researchers regarding how tribulus terrestris works in the body exactly. But what they do know is that it doesn’t appear to increase testosterone per se (or at least at a significant enough level anyway), but it works to increase libido and sexuality by increasing the amount and density of androgen receptors in the brain [8], which is what testosterone binds to.
Fenugreek
Fenugreek is commonly known for its libido-enhancing properties. But more recently, this ingredient has been postulated to increase testosterone. The primary compounds in fenugreek (called furostanolic saponins) are what is most often deemed as responsible for a potential increase in testosterone [22]. However, researchers have not been able to determine the possible mechanism in human studies.
Ashwagandha
Ashwagandha technically hasn’t been proven to increase testosterone directly, but it has the potential to increase it via an indirect mechanism; cortisol reduction [2].
Cortisol is commonly known as the “stress hormone”, and for good reason. Cortisol is a catabolic hormone, meaning that its job is to breakdown cells in the body in order to be converted to energy. However, this can be detrimental to fitness goals such as muscle-building, which is one of testosterone’s primary jobs.
Ashwagandha inhibits a significant amount of cortisol production from occurring, thus, allowing the testosterone to do its job more efficiently.
Zinc
Zinc deficiency can cause low testosterone, so it is vital that people consume enough zinc every day in order to avoid this. The potential mechanism as to why having low levels of zinc causes low testosterone is not exactly known. But researchers speculate that it could be that zinc affects the Leydig cells [12], which are responsible for the creation of testosterone within the testicles.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D is actually a form of prohormone; meaning that it acts as the step that is necessary before the creation of testosterone. Vitamin D deficiency has been shown to cause a low testosterone condition in men [1], so it is vital that men get at least 2000 IU or more per day of Vitamin D.
Note: This is NOT to say that other ingredients that aren’t on this list do not work and will never work. They just have not been tested enough in a controlled experimental setting in order to be touted as “effective” or “ineffective”.
Recommended Dosages of Test Boosting Ingredients
Coming from the “List of Testosterone Boosting Ingredients to Look For” section of this guide, the recommended dosages for these effective testosterone-boosting ingredients are as follows:
- D-Aspartic Acid
- 2,000-3,000mg [17] per day appears to work best
- Tribulus Terrestris
- 1,875mg [18] per day
- Can be split up into multiple servings per day if desired
- Fenugreek
- 600mg [22] daily
- Ashwagandha
- 5 grams [2] daily
- Zinc
- 3mg/kg [12] of body weight per day
- Vitamin D
- 3,000-5,000 IU [1] per day
Proposed Benefits of a Testosterone Booster
Many people think of testosterone boosters simply as a means to get more muscular or increase strength. While this may be the motive for some, there are plenty of other reasons why people choose to take testosterone boosters.
The benefits that many people strive towards when taking this supplement include, but are not limited to:
- Improved Libido
- Increased Vitality (vigor, motivation, overall “manliness”)
- Decreased Body Fat Accumulation
- Improved Muscle Tone
- Higher Sperm Count & Improved Sperm Quality/Motility
- Decreased Levels of Anxiety
Forms of Test Boosters
As of the publication of this article, the form that the vast majority of testosterone boosters come in are capsules, but there are some that come in tablet form as well. Because of the large number of ingredients often used in testosterone boosters, this makes it much easier for manufacturers to fit all of the ingredients into manageable serving sizes.
Test boosters often come in what is called a formulation, which basically means that it is a combination of particular ingredients that the manufacturer believes to be the most effective and synergistic combination available for the purpose of increasing and optimizing testosterone. But you can also buy the ingredients separately; possibly even from the same manufacturer.
This may be the right move if you feel you’re severely lacking in a single ingredient (such as Vitamin D or Zinc) but it would be too impractical to take more of the current formulation that you have, as that would simply be a waste of the other ingredients that you are not deficient in.
However, this may not be the right thing to do if all of the dosages in the formulation are optimal and you are not lacking in any particular ingredients, as you would be unnecessarily spending more money in the long run for no good reason.
Test Booster FAQ
These are some of the most commonly asked questions about testosterone boosters.
Wrapping Up
In summary, remember to make sure that when you’re shopping for a testosterone booster, it fits your specific needs. In other words, does it cover any deficiencies you believe/know that you have, such as a VItamin D or Zinc deficiency? Do you think you would benefit from ingredients that aren’t directly linked to testosterone production, such as Ashwagandha for anxiety?
The great thing about testosterone boosters is that they’re not just for increasing your testosterone levels; they’re also for improving your overall quality of life both inside and outside of the gym. Think of them more as “lifestyle supplements”.
All in all, testosterone boosters are a safe and relatively affordable way to accelerate your progress to the next level. But remember, this is given that all of the other pillars of your training are in place, such as a solid training and nutrition regimen. Once those are all set, then adding a high-quality testosterone booster to the mix can skyrocket your results even further!
