But it’s still important to think of why exactly we’re taking a multivitamin supplement in the first place. After all, we’re spending our hard-earned money on it, right?

Some of the most popular proposed benefits from companies that manufacture often tout are:

  • Addressing nutritional deficiencies

  • Improve mood

Now, there are many other benefits that companies claim you can get from taking a multivitamin supplement. It’s just that the ones listed above appear to be the most prominent, as well as backed up most by the scientific research.

So let’s see how true these claims really are…

Addressing Nutritional Deficiencies

It’s best to address this issue with whole foods before reaching for a multivitamin supplement as a simple (some would say “lazy”) fix. Unfortunately, however, this isn’t always possible.

There are some groups of people in particular that are more susceptible to developing significant deficiencies in essential vitamins and minerals, where if not addressed appropriately, the results could be detrimental.

These groups of people include, but are not limited to:


  • Common vitamin and mineral deficiencies in the elderly include calcium, vitamin B12, and Vitamin D [53][54]. So having them take a multivitamin may improve their longevity as a whole, as well as quality-of-life health markers, such as cognition. However, more research needs to specifically be conducted on adults over the age of 65.

Health Conditions Involving Digestion Or Metabolism

  • There are several medical conditions that negatively impact nutrient absorption and metabolism. These conditions are often associated with the gastrointestinal system in some fashion, such as Celiac disease [55] and type 2 diabetes [56]. Sometimes, it’s not the disease itself particularly, but the medication that a person is taking to treat it that is causing poor absorption of nutrients, such as diuretics for blood pressure [57].

Improving Your Immune System

There are particular vitamins and minerals that are responsible for improvements in immune function, such as Vitamin C [58], Zinc [59], and Selenium [60]. If this is the primary reason (or one of them anyway) for taking a multivitamin supplement, then make sure the multivitamin you take is high in levels of these three vitamins and minerals!

Helping You Live Longer

As nice as this sounds, it’s actually very difficult to prove this using scientific research. This is because of the fact that it’s pretty hard to follow somebody around and make sure they’re taking their multivitamin every day and then find a way to attribute the use of the supplement to having a significant impact on their longevity.

The good news is that we actually have reviews that look into this. The bad news is that simply taking a multivitamin is unlikely to lengthen your lifespan to any significant extent compared to those who don’t take one [61][62].

Improving Your Mood

Mood is sort of a broad term, so it can encompass several different areas.

In a meta-analysis (which is a study that compares other studies amongst one another in order to reach a broad conclusion) found that those who took a multivitamin experienced improvements in markers associated with mood such as anxiety, hostility, stress, and “brain fog” [63]. This is actually very significant, given that these adults were healthy people without diagnosed mental health disorders.

The caveat here is that no improvements have been seen in those who suffer from depression, at least not yet anyway [64].

Provide You With More Energy Throughout The Day

Just like with mood, the term “energy” is a very broad term. We can talk about physical energy, or stimulation, or more so mental energy, like clarity of thoughts and cognitive processing (something a good nootropic supplement might provide). But it can be assumed that most people, at least in this case, are talking about the physical aspect of energy here.

Taking a multivitamin with a dense amount of B-vitamins is essential in this case, particularly if you’re deficient in them.

Vitamin B12, for example, has been shown to increase energy in those who were previously deficient after taking a supplement containing an adequate dose of Vitamin B12 [65].
